Never Struggle With Understanding Google Analytics Again

Google Analytics is one of the best internet business analytics tools available for free. Because of this, knowing and understanding what Google Analytics has is very important. This is why I've decided to write a post on understanding Google Analytics.

When you first log into Google Analytics you'll notice it has a vast array of dashboards. These initial dashboards can be of great help and can give you an idea of how your internet business is doing. When looking at these dashboards you may not understand what it is trying to tell you. So, to help let's start at the beginning.

The Visitor Graph

Understanding Your Google Analytics DashboardsThe visitor graph is one of the most important graphs on this page. Why? Because it gives you a basic idea of how many visitors you are receiving during a period of time. This allows you to see if the number of visitors to your internet business's website is growing, shrinking, or going stale. In essence this is basically the barometer to how well you are doing in general. It's not going to tell you what you need to fix per say but it will tell you if you are going south or staying the same. This tells you to look deeper into problems if they exist.

If you are hoping to find out what is wrong this graph isn't going to help directly, unless of course there is a massive drop on a single day and you only made one change to your internet business's website on that day. Not a likely scenario though.

Increase Your Internet Business's Conversions With A/B Testing

how-to-do-a/b-testingWhen you are new to building an internet business trying to figure out which button, advertisement, or headline gives you the best conversion rate can be a bit daunting. Luckily as an internet business entrepreneur you have options and some of these options are free. Using Google's Website Optimizer you can do just that by doing some A/B testing on your internet business's website for free.

So what is A/B testing?

A/B testing also known as split testing is a way for you to compare two or more different website pages on your internet business's website to see which one has the highest conversion rate. Essentially, they are identical pages but with a single variation. This way, you can gather data on each page and know that the only difference is the variation and it therefore was the determining factor for your conversion rate.

Let's look at an example. You created your internet business's home page and have an email subscriber form on the top right of a navigation bar and are considering moving it down to the middle of your navigation bar. Your current page with the form on the top right is considered to be the control or Option A. The variation or change is Option B. With A/B testing you can find out which version gives you the best results by basically following the same concepts that you used in your science class experiments back in high school. You create two variations with one, Option A as a controlled and the other Option B as being the variation to Option A. Then you perform a test like have x amount of website traffic be diverted equally to each option and finally go back to see which option gave you the best conversion rate.

This is where social media for many internet business owners can be confusing. How do you track your social media efforts in tools like Google Analytics so you can extract the data that you need?

Let's start with the basics and move on from there.

If you're looking to track your social media button clicks, Google Analytics can do this as well and I've explained an how to do this as well.

How Do I Separate my Social Media Traffic Away From The Rest of My traffic in Google Analytics?

Your social media traffic can be separated in Google Analytics by setting up your social media referral traffic as different traffic in Google Analytics. Essentially, you goal is to analyze just the social media traffic by breaking it into different segments that will help you determine which social media strategy is working and what part of each campaign is the most effective. To do this you will need to setup advanced segments for your social media traffic.
